What is Root Canal Therapy?
Root canal therapy is a procedure meant to remove infected pulp due to decay as a last resort, ultimately saving the tooth. The pulp is located inside the tooth and contains connective tissue, blood vessels, and nerves. Before we begin, we will first apply local anesthesia around the infected area.
We will then create on opening and remove the infected pulp from inside the tooth. Once the pulp is removed, the entire area will be thoroughly cleaned and then sealed. To further protect the tooth, we will cap it with a dental crown.
What are the Symptoms of an Infected Tooth?
An infected tooth usually has very noticeable symptoms, but if you come in for your biannual visit, there is a high possibility we will be able to see the decay and take action before it worsens. Here are some common signs:
- Swelling or tender gums
- Tooth pain
- Sensitivity to hot and cold
- Face swelling
- Bad breath
What are the Benefits of Root Canal Therapy?
Sometimes root canal therapy is necessary in order to improve your oral health. If a tooth infection is left untreated for too long, you could experience severe pain and maybe lose the tooth. There is also a chance the infection could spread to other parts of the body. With a root canal procedure, you can prevent this from happening and be left with a healthy smile, free of pain and discomfort.
